VI.17.8 Pompeii. Shop. Excavated 1771?, 1804?.

According to Fiorelli - VI.17.7 and 8 –

“Seguono altre due tabernae, in vicinanza delle quali dovevano trovarsi varii programmi, trasportati nel Museo, e fra quelli di candidature piu note uno che dice:

AED .  FABIVS .  EVPOR .  PRINCEPS .  LIBERTINORVM

According to Eschebach – this shop would have been damaged by the 1943 bombing. She said it was excavated in 1804, and then restored in 1977.

Shop entrance, in the middle was a cistern-mouth, to the right at the back were the stairs to the upper floor, no longer there.

The east side of the main road (Via Consolare – House of the Vestals and House of the Surgeon) was excavated between 1770-1771, from here the excavators moved across to the west side of the roadway towards the two shops at VI.17.7 and 8. These would have been excavated c.1771.

According to Eschebach, this shop was bombed in 1943.

It may have been damaged when a bomb fell on VI.17.9 and destroyed the three dividing walls on the north side of the atrium.

According to Fiorelli, in the vicinity of the two shops at VI.17.8 and 7, were found various electoral recommendations.

Many of these were cut from the walls and taken to Naples Museum, the most noted candidate being –

According to Varone and Stefani, CIL IV 117, was probably found between entrances 9-13.

It was cut from the wall and taken to the Naples Museum, Inventory number 4722.

According to Varone and Stefani, found written on the walls between VI.17.8 and 7, along the Via Consolare were –

CIL IV 118, 119, 120, 121, 122, 123, and 124.
